An opera is born - Aci Galatea and Polifemo are coming to Copenhagen
The river Aci is in Sicily. The opera brings it everywhere. This time it flows to Copenhagen. Follow us.
Aci, Galatea and Polifemo is a serenade by G.F.Handel based on the myth of Aci, from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The beautifulsea-nymph Galatea is in love with the young, handsome shepherd Aci, much to thecyclops Polifemo's jealousy. Polifemo will end up killing Aci, and Aci'sflowing blood will be transformed into a river, in which the two lovers willunite forever.
Handel's serenade was composed in Naples (1708)as a piece of outdoor entertainment for a noble wedding; its function then wasto draw people together for a specific occasion. Pakhus 11 is not aneutral theatrical space however, but rather a post-industrial space thathas acquired the function of gathering people, thus creating social andcultural links amongst them. This baroque piece is set in its performance spacelike a stone in a jewel, establishing a mutual relationship that enhances thebest features of both: in this case, an urban baroque opera-event at Pakhus 11!
A Copenhagen based artistic team was built aroundthe collaboration between Deda Cristina Colonna (director) and AlfredoBernardini (conductor), who are both Italian. This performance features thecelebrated baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen, a cast of internationalsingers (Deborah York, Sonia Prina and João Fernandes) and the unusual,"urban" contribution of Copenhagenbased artists Ossip Frolov (goldsmith) and Jens Gunnar (makeup and hair fashionstylist).
Within the opera, themes connected to vanity, violence and extreme feelings make it relevant to a contemporary audience. Apre-performance gathering in the bar will allow the audience to experience themain themes of the opera before the beginning of the actual performance. Inthis social context, interviews will be presented and Ossip Frolov willalso design and produce a series of custom-made jewellery in direct connectionwith the staging and set design of Aci, Galatea & Polifemo.
